WIP: 1:350 Scale NCC-1701-A (Scott)

This version of the famous starship is the one seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

The model is lighted with a lighting kit built by Trekmodeler.

I am also using photo etch details made by Paragrafix.

Last update: 10/11/2021 - *COMPLETED*

This is where it all starts - light blocking the pieces where lights will be installed. I started with a sand and bluish color; the final coat is a silver that will help reflect light to fill the body.

Starting work on miniature interior details...

The botanical gardens...initial painting...prior to adding walls and landscaping... This is just the "underlayment."

Adding photo etch detail pieces to the hangar/cargo bay walls...

Painting of hangar/cargo bay floor and ceiling pieces...

Painting of the officers lounge/ready room - this is the version from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, an after-market resin part created by Don's Light & Magic.

Shuttle/cargo bay walls.

Completed botanical gardens.

Completed officers lounge/ready room.

Wired shuttle bay running lights.

Assembled shuttle bay.

Beginning to wire/light the secondary hull. Installed the arboretum and the shuttle bay.

Working on closing up the secondary hull.

The secondary hull is assembled and gaps have been filled and sanded at the base of the pylons. This is one place the fitting is very off on the PL kit, so it must be filled. I used a steel-reinforced epoxy compound.

Secondary hull assembled except for the frame around the shuttle bay opening. Gaps filled and sanded down; primary coat of paint applied. Almost ready to begin masking for Aztec pattern.

The base, built by LaserFire Creations.

Beginning to light the saucer halves. Lower saucer first...

Upper saucer lighting...

Applied Aztec masking to the secondary hull.

Painting aztec pattern on hull.

Secondary hull done for now.

Putting aztec masks on the saucer. One of the most time consuming steps of the whole build.

After removing the aztec masks. Next step will be adding a layer of white to blend the two colors.

Finished with the saucer aztec painting and almost all of the detail painting. The only thing left is the bridge. The bridge will be a third-party, more accurate replacement of the one in the kit.

I've attached the saucer to the secondary hull, applied some of the decals on the underside of the ship, and mounted the ship on the base.

May not look like much, but it's the first steps to getting the warp nacelles together!

Lighting the deflector dish assembly.

Deflector assembly attached to the ship.

Assembling/lighting the warp nacelles.

And...she's complete and ready to depart spacedock!

She's home with her owner. Survived the trip to California.
